5Lightest and smallest high quality umbrellaJun 21, 2010
By Lincoln
Eagle Creek makes high quality backpacking and travel equipment. They create innovative designs that constantly receive the highest praise from experienced world travelers and backpackers. This ultra-light umbrella is no different. I have a handful of Eagle Creek travel items and am very pleased with them all.

The Eagle Creek Numbus SL Travel Umbrella is the lightest and smallest umbrella that I could find online and in stores. I've traveled to the well-known camping and sporting goods stores to personally compare the different designs by Shed Rain, Victorinox, Totes, and others. This umbrella clearly came out on top.

The craftsmanship is top quality. The materials are durable and attractive - using a nylon canopy and aluminum and stainless steel parts. No cheap plastic parts are used in this umbrella.

When closed, the umbrella is only 9 inches long - more compact that other travel umbrellas. Extended, the total length is 20 inches. The distance across the canopy point to point (diameter across the center point) is 35 inches. Following the contours of the dome, it is 39 inches. Fully closed, the circumference is 5.5 inches at the thickest part. That's wrapping the tape measure around the folded umbrella. The diameter (distance across) is 1.75 inches. The umbrella's weight is a remarkable 5.5 ounces (0.16 kg) - approximately 1/2 the weight of other "light weight" travel umbrellas.

I have used this umbrella in rain storms with moderate winds. It has performed perfectly. I haven't yet experienced any high winds, so I am unable to comment on it's effectiveness. What I can say, however, is that the Eagle Creek Nimbus SL is built much stronger than my Shed Rain umbrellas. So I can safely assume that this Nimbus SL umbrella will hold up to strong winds as well as or better than other umbrellas.

Often times ultralight products sacrifice on strength and durability, however this is not the case with products made from high quality camping and backpacking companies like Eagle Creek. You'll pay a little more for strong and light materials and you'll get a much better product. Surprisingly, this Eagle Creek umbrella sells for much less than other light weight umbrellas and outperforms them as a travel item. I highly recommend this umbrella above all others.

3Nice, small travel umbrellaOct 16, 2010

Pros: Not sure there exists a smaller, more compact umbrella. Great for carrying in your back pocket, or if you travel, in your briefcase or messenger bag. Appears to be made of good quality material, but I'm not an expert on this topic.

Cons: Can't imagine this small umbrella will be able to withstand significant winds, so probably not ideal in harsh weather (like most compact umbrellas). Also lacks an auto release botton, should that be important to you. Finally, it's not easily returned to its storage sleeve, and since it has only a thin velcro wrap for storage, it's not convenient to put away.

I note that I previously owned a small Totes umbrella, which worked well for me (and had auto release and a hefty velcro strap), but after several years broke down. If a small travel umbrella is your main objective, either the Totes or Eagle Creek would be fine.

**UPDATE** I can state that after owning for over a year, the umbrella did not stand up well to heavy winds. I still think a solid purchase (although have lowered my rating from four to three stars), because of its size and thus transportation convenience, but you should consider your anticipated use/environment.

1A piece of junk. And that's an understatement.Jun 09, 2011

Because of the positive reviews it has received, I bought this umbrella for my wife. The delivery was super fast. The umbrella is very compact when folded (slightly less than 10 inches in length). It opened & closed fairly easily (manually). But, it only took a few seconds for me to realize that the quality just wasn't very good. The metal on the jointed "fingers" is fairly thin in certain spots. I've been around long enough to be able to judge whether something is well-made. This umbrella feels cheap (read on, please)

UPDATE: My wife had been using this umbrella on a daily basis to protect herself from the relentless California sun. After a few days of use, one of the "fingers" broke which caused the umbrella to sag. Although it was embarrassing to be seen using a broken umbrella, my wife continued to use it. Within a few more days, 3 or 4 of the fingers had broken and my wife threw the 10-day-old umbrella in the trash.

For those of you who gave good reviews, I must wonder if you got the same brand of umbrella that I got. The Nimbus umbrella that I recently bought from Eagle Creek (because of good reviews) was a total piece of JUNK. If Eagle Creek wants to retain a positive reputation with consumers, they should stop selling this item.

Bought this umbrella to go to Europe. It worked fine and weighs nothing. Good purchase.

3Just too small of coverage areaAug 15, 2011

This umbrella is fine as far as the build goes. However, it's coverage is so small it won't keep even one person dry. It's just not functional.
